Top Five First Friday Flops in Bollywood
Bollywood makers consider the first week of the New Year jinxed and therefore avoid releasing their films on that day. More than a decade now the films releasing in the first week have been flopping badly in Bollywood. Here is taking a look at the Top 5 flops that released on the first Friday of a new year. If one looks closely, it is not really the jinx but the pathetic films that don't fare well.
Flop No. 5 Jawani Diwani (2006)
"Serial Kisser" read the jersey of Emraan Hashmi on the posters of Jawani Diwani - A Youthful Ride. Despite a hot chumma between Kisser boy Hashmi and Celina Jaitley, the film sank without a trace. The youthful ride was actually a bumpy ride with loads of crude double entendre dialogues. Celina Jaitley's no holds barred exposure also could not make this ride any better for the viewers.
Flop No. 4 Vaada (2005)
Producer Vashu Bhagnani after giving five flops (Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein, Deewanaapan, Om Jai Jagadish, Jeena Sirf Merre Liye and Out Of Control) in a row for four years, decided to play safe by remaking a super successful Tamil film Sabash. Vaada, a decent thriller starring Arjun Rampal, Amisha Patel and Zayed Khan was a box office turkey thanks to its bad direction by Satish Kaushik who made a mess out of a good original source.
Flop No. 3 Ishq Hai Tumse (2004)
Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea had given a super duper hit in Raaz (2002) and a major flop Gunaah (2002) together before this one. The music by Himesh Reshammiya had registered good album sales. But the film, a remake of a Telugu film, Sampangi, starring television actress Kanchi Kaul (Ek Ladki Anjaani Si) was a big disaster at the ticket window. There were too many similarities between the plot of Hum Aapke Hai Kaun in this one and the ticket paying public had no interest in watching a stale subject on a new year Friday.
Flop No. 2 Talaash (2003)
Director Sunil Darshan and his lucky mascot Akshay Kumar were hoping for a hat trick post Jaanwar (1999) and Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001) with Talaash. Kareena Kapoor was paired opposite Akshay in this cliché ridden story of baap ke khoon ka badla aur behen ki izzat raksha. Cinema owners had to talaash for audiences who could come to watch this film, but had no such New Year luck.
Flop No. 1 Mela (2000)
Aamir Khan had paired up again with his Raja Hindustani maker Dharmesh Darshan for Mela with Twinkle and younger brother Faisal Khan. But this daaku-drama, a mish-mash of Caravan (1971) and Sholay (1975) was rejected out right by the cinema going junta on the day of its release. Aamir's efforts of resurrecting his brother's flop career went vain. Twinkle who had given a hit each with the other two Khans, Salman (Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai) and Shah Rukh (Baadshah) could not complete a hat trick with the talented, Aamir Khan. As for Faisal, he just got lost in the mela of has-beens in Bollywood.
