Teacher Anupam backs Vinod Mehra's daughter
Vinod Mehra's daughter Sonia Mehra, who is making her debut in Victoria No 203's remake, says her acting teacher convinced the producer that she could do the tougher scenes in the film.
And her acting teacher is... Anupam Kher, who taught Sonia at his institute, An Actor Prepares.
"Kamal in particular was not convinced that I could do it but Anupam Kher pushed him to take me in," reveals Sonia, who will be playing Saira Banu's role. Sonia has performed on two songs, which were also in the original, including the classic Do Bechare, Bina Sahare.
'Kamal' is Kamal Sadanah, last seen in 1993's Rang, who is back in Bollywood, playing the villain in the movie and and also producing it. Anant Mahadevan is directing it and says that though the plot broadly tracks the earlier film, there are some differences. Anant, who has also acted in the film, says, "I make an appearance in the climax which totally changes the course of the story. We have specially designed Victoria (a horse-drawn carriage) for this film, which is seen till the climax unlike the original where it is only till the interval."
Sadanah is paired opposite Mohabbatein girl Preeti Jhangiani, who incidentally is also doing a negative role for the first time. "Apart from playing a shady character, I will also be presented as a glamour girl, which is also a first for me," she says coyly.
The characters of the lovable rogues, played originally by Ashok Kumar and Pran, will be played now by Om Puri and Anupam Kher respectively. There was talk of Pran in a special appearance but since he is not in the best of health, the idea was dropped. The original Victoria No. 203 was released in 1972.
