Shyam Benegal to start Mahadeva in September
Shyam Benegal will begin work on his next film tentatively titled Mahadeva, with Shreyas Talpade and Amrita Rao, sometime in September this year. This film is based on the letter writers in village post offices and their importance in the rural scenario. Everything has been finalized - the actors have verbally given the confirmation and only have to sign the contracts.
An eminent and respected name in the world of filmmaking, Benegal brought in the 'new cinema' with his first film Ankur (1973) and gave the film industry one of its most powerful actresses in the form of Shabana Azmi. His films like Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1976), Sardari Begum (1996) may not have been box office successes but they undoubtedly gave Benegal a cult status. So much so that a glamourous and hardcore commercial actress like Karisma Kapoor, lowered her price and did his Zubeidaa (2001), which upped her ranking as an actress.
Benegal is also a member of the teaching faculty in the USA, in the universities of Colombia and Chicago. Once in two years, Benegal flies off to the States with wife Neeru for a month and teaches film appreciation courses to a mixture of Indians and western students.
