Khanna & Iyer Khanna & Iyer: Masala Mix

indya.com rating: 2.5 out of 5

Cast: Sarvar Ahuja, Aditi Sharma, Manoj Pahwa, Mushtaq Khan and Yashpal Sharma
Director: Hemant Hegde

Synopsis: Aryan (Sarvar) and Nandini (Aditi) are in love. But Tamilian Nandini's MLA father, Raghavan Iyer (Mushtaq Khan) hates Sarvar's dad, Shekhar Khanna (Manoj Pahwa) a flamboyant Punjabi builder. The North - South divide between the two families leads to parental opposition to their wedding following which they elope. On the run, they pass through the Lal Dora jungle where certain circumstances lead to a CD falling in Nandini's bag. The CD contains the proof linking a famous politician to an on the run terrorist, Donga (Yashpal Sharma) who is currently hiding in the jungle. At the same time their warring parents join hands and come looking out for them in the jungle. What follows then is a series of funny adventures and misadventures.

Acting: Both the debutantes Sarvar and Aditi, winner couple of Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj make a confident debut. Though their chemistry works well together, Aditi overshadows Sarvar completely with her natural comfort and expression in front of the camera. She is surely bound to go a long way in Bollywood. Comedians Mushtaq Khan (you might remember him as Aamir Khan's "Japan se aaya hun" Manager in Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke) and Manoj Pahwa (Inspector in Being Cyrus) provide able support and come out with some hilarious moments together. Yashpal Sharma irritates.

Khanna & Iyer Direction: Debutante director Hemant Hegde shows technical finesse but his narrative is saddled with predictable moments, especially in the second half. He has made a typical masala movie that entertains while you are watching it but you forget once you are out of the cinema hall. Hegde has extracted good performances from all his actors and kept the momentum pacy though.

Script: The script of the film developed by Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts Workshop is typically filmy right from the word go but is made sustainable to some extent by witty one liners penned by Javed Siddiqui and the actors performing them. The initial jungle scenes between the couple are cute but they become repetitive thereafter. So also the whole politician - terrorist nexus and its culmination lacks novelty. One of the silliest parts of the film involves an elderly con woman (looking unintentionally funny with her make up) offering the couple shelter in her jungle hut and later running away with their belongings. Woh con thi anyone?

Khanna & Iyer Music: Tabun Sutradhar's music is easy on the ears if not extraordinary. The Kunal Ganjawala - Shreya Ghoshal sung Raasta Pyaar Ka is upbeat and the best pick of the lot. It is also carried on throughout the film as a background theme. Rootho Naa, by Kunal and Shreya again, is the usual roothna manaana number one sees in love stories but has a certain cuteness attached to it and grows on you on repeated listening. Dil Garden Garden Ho Gaya is not as silly as it sounds. Sung by Sudesh Bhonsale and Kunal it is a catchy tuned item number picturised in the jungle on Mr. Khanna & Mr. Iyer. It makes for side-splitting viewing watching them both dance.
