Janani could have been a perfect fit in the 1970s and 1980s, as it deals with an outdated theme.
Rahul's (Vineet Raina) life is turned upside down when he introduces his girlfriend Neha (Sonica Handa) to his parents Raj (Mohnish Bahl) and Urmila (Ayesha Jhulka). They vehemently oppose when they get to know about Neha's family. It turns out that Neha is actually Rahul's sister. Devastated with the news, both Rahul and Neha force their respective parents to reveal the actual story. Then comes Akanksha (Bhagyashree) who turns out to be the real mother of Rahul and all complications are solved towards the end with everybody living happily ever after.
Bhagyashree is good and almost carries the entire film on her shoulders. Ayesha Jhulka is theatrical. Both actresses are made to look young with no signs of ageing in the roles of mothers who have children of marriageable age. Mohnish Bahl is sincere but one wonders why he has been given the line, Tum Fikar Mat Karo Sab Kuch Thik Ho Jaayega many times in the film in various situations which evokes unintentional laughter. Aman Verma who plays Bhagyashree's husband goes completely over the top in the few scenes that he has. Newcomers Vineet Raina and Sonica Handa make a confident debut.
Chander Behl's direction does not appeal to the audience. Written by Mohan Azad of Chandni Bar fame, the film does have a story to boast of unlike other recent films that rely more on style and other technical aspects. But the screenplay does not captivate the audience's interest till the end.
A film that relies heavily on human emotions fails to strike any emotional chord with the audience. The suspense of the film is stretched out too far needlessly in the climax. Music by Nirmal Pawar is plain mediocre.
The target audience for Janani seems to be the female audience across the country but having seen such themes often in the daily soaps on television, it is a remote possibility that the movie will find any patronage amongst them.
