Director: Raj Kanwar
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu
Over the decades, Bollywood has churned out love triangles with amazing regularity. With movies like Sangam, Silsila, Saajan to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Aitraaz, romance continues to be the pet subject here.
Raj Kanwar meanders on the same path in Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, though with some innovation. But what indeed is cause for concern is that Raj Kanwar treats the subject in an old-fashioned manner. The screenplay is so hackneyed, so conventional that you often wonder whether you're watching one of those old-fashioned, conservative sagas of the 1970s.
Of course, Raj peps up the goings-on with some interesting moments, but they aren't enough to camouflage the defects (courtesy - the screenplay), which refuses to rise beyond predictability. Even the end, which should've been different, is so bizarre that you often wonder whether you're actually watching a contemporary film.
Aditya (Akshay Kumar) is an automobile engineer in a car company and he is as passionate about cars as Shakespeare was about writing. Aditya is engaged to Sonia (Bipasha Basu), a fashion designer about to make her mark in the field. As individuals, Aditya and Sonia are not on the same wavelength. Sonia is a 21st Century woman for whom career comes first and she believes in changes. And as much as Aditya tries to overlook these facts, they keep coming in the way.
Though the marriage date is fixed, Aditya leaves for Canada to learn about the technique of a new car model, to be launched in India and Sonia leaves for Paris for a fashion show. And that's where the story gains momentum.
In between work, co-incidence or destiny, Aditya bumps into Jia (Katrina Kaif) more than once. Jia, daughter of business tycoon Yashwardhan Birla, has come to Canada all alone to shop for her wedding with the business giant, Karan Raichand.
Jia being a simple girl with simple needs, gets everything she could ask for in her childhood, except time from her busy father. And now, the man her father has chosen for her, hardly has any time to spend with her too. And that is when she finds a friend in Aditya. Aditya and Jia manage to spend time with each other and as time passes, the friendship between them grows.
Being an amazing driver, Aditya is offered to participate in a car rally by his company. He persuades Jia to participate with him, and wins it too. On returning from the rally, their car gets stuck in the snow and they spend the night together. They share intimate moments, which make them forget that they were engaged, but not to each other.
With passing time, they fail to realize when they start falling in love with each other. But a misunderstanding with Aditya and prior commitment with Karan makes Jia go back to India to get married with Karan. Aditya also comes back to India to get married to Sonia and does not attempt to meet Jia ever again. But fate makes them meet for the last time at Jia's wedding…
Coming to actors, Akshay Kumar has delivered power-packed performance and his chemistry with Katrina Kaif is a treat to the eyes. Bipasha has nothing substantial to do in the film but has played her part well. On the other hand, music of Humko Deewana Kar Gaye is spirited and lively with the title song Humko Deewana Kar Gaye leading the pack and Fanah adding a little bit of fizz.
On the whole, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye is a weak fare, with the outdated script as its biggest drawback. At the box-office, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye will face rough weather!
