Hat Trick Hat Trick: On a Sticky Wicket

indya.com rating: 2.5 out of 5

Cast: Nana Patekar, Kunal Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Danny and Rimi Sen
Director: Milan Lutharia

Synopsis: The film has three unconnected stories running parallel to each other during the Cricket World Cup. Each story ends by bringing about a positive change in the characters involved as the World Cup finishes.

Satyajeet (Nana) is a no nonsense doctor who refuses to smile and is considered a bore by everyone around him including his wife and a cricket crazy kid. A former Indian team pace bowler, David Abraham (Danny) is admitted to a hospital with kidney failure. As the film proceeds, a full of life David manages to bring a definite change in Satyajeet's attitude towards life. Hemu Patel (Paresh Rawal) is a janitor working in Britain desperate for a UK citizenship. A cricket loving Hemu, has led all his life lying to his mates that he is working as an immigration officer. He longs to return back to India to his relatives as an UK citizen. Ultimately when he receives it, he realizes it's not the only thing that matters in life.

Saby (Kunal Kapoor) and Kashmira (Rimi) is a newly married couple. Saby is a cricket fanatic who chooses India's World Cup match over his suhaag raat. He always ignores his wife's attempts to seduce him from cricket. On her friends' advice she decides to teach him a lesson by faking an obsession for the Indian wicket keeper Dhoni. This works to her advantage and her hubby mends his ways finally.

Hat Trick Acting: Nana Patekar has a role pretty similar to the one he played in Milan's last film, Taxi No 9211, yet he manages to pleasantly surprise us with his small nuances. Danny entertains the most and makes us want to see him more often. Kunal Kapoor is strictly okay and so is Rimi. Kunal's strip tease during the climax brings out unexpected laughter. Paresh Rawal in a non comic role is dependable as usual. Commentator Harsha Bhogle in a cameo is good.

Direction: Milan has chosen a subject that goes well with the current World Cup mania. However, he could have managed the second half a little better. He has handled certain sequences very well though, that includes - hospital scenes between Nana and Danny when the later is admitted to the hospital, Rawal's wife making him realize his mistakes in life and Kunal's parents explaining to him the meaning of a happy married life.

Script: Rajat Arora's script has a novel theme but the novelty wears off till the interval arrives. Certain situations look straight out of life and do touch you. The Kunal - Rimi track looks the most unwanted one and its culmination looks half baked. The Nana - Danny sequences have come out very well with some witty one - liners and you don't mind the veterans taking the maximum screen time.

Music: Pritam comes out with an average score. Wicket Bacha shown during the end titles with its Caribbean beat and shot taking style is fun to watch. Rabba Khair Kare, a bhangra pop song comes in regular intervals in Kunal's story is just about okay. The remix version of 80s hit number Jab Chaye Mera Jaadu picturised on Rimi seducing Kunal slows the pace of the film down.
