Sadashiv Amrapurkar's daughter turns Director
Sadhashiv Amrapurkar's daughter Rema Amrapurkar is directing her father in her debut film, Arre Arre Aaba Aata Tari Thamba. The film is complete and ready for release. It was shot in 41 different outdoor locations in 22 days.
"The film is based on malnutrition. I have completed my Masters in Economics. So while doing my Research, I visited lots of rural places, where the so called development has not taken place. I have seen all those realities and I think Cinema is the greatest medium for revolution. Look at how the Jessica Lall case evoked strong reactions in the wake of Rang De Basanti," says Rema, who has done a screenplay writing course under Michelle Tagioff and has also assisted Ravi Chopra for Baabul. She is currently assisting Induji (Inder Kumar) for Dhamaal.
"Though my film deals with a serious issue, I have tried to put the subject in front of the audiences in the form of comedy. No one generally goes for a serious movie based on social subject," feels Rema.
"My mother is a writer and I used to discuss all these subjects with her. I also used to write articles for Loksatta based on child death and malnutrition. My wish always was to do films based on such subjects. I have also researched about distribution and publicity. So very soon I'll release the film."
On her decision to direct a Marathi film Rema says, "Basically people say that anyone can make a film in Marathi with a low budget, but I think Maharashtrians are more open to experimental subjects. Their response to such issues are generally very encouraging since their thinking pattern is also different from the Hindi audiences. And further, my mother tongue is Marathi. So I'm more comfortable with it."
She adds, "I always wanted to remain behind the camera. I'm not comfortable with the publicity which actors or known faces get. It is true that some directors are also getting a lot of recognition nowadays but they are more like exceptions."
Speaking about he father Rema says, "On the sets my dad is not my dad. He behaves like an actor and never used to interfere in my work. He is completely a director's actor. As a father he used to care for me but that's it. I can't judge whether I'm a good director or daughter but he is definitely a very good actor."
Sadashiv had this to say about the film. "I'm playing a negative character called Patil. Later on, he realises that he is wrong and tries to improve himself. There is no hero/heroine in the film and all characters are comic and lovable."
Rema has not written the screenplay of the film but the topic is related to her study. She has worked for a few Government projects like fertility and rural malnutrition. Balaji Waghmode, who is a professor, has penned the script. The movie has four songs.
Sadashiv, is one of the finest actors of the Marathi and Hindi film industry, and has done films like Sadak, Coolie No.1, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Kachche Dhaage and Rishtey among many others. He is famous for his negative roles and has won awards and critical acclaim for his roles in Marathi and Hindi films.
